Normal cholesterol level

Cholesterol is a fatty substance (a lipid) that is an important part of the outer lining (membrane) of cells in the body of animals. Normal cholesterol level plays important role in a person’s heart health. High blood cholesterol is a main risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke.

Total cholesterol is the sum of LDL (low density) cholesterol, HDL (high density) cholesterol, VLDL (very low density) cholesterol, and IDL (intermediate density) cholesterol.

As far as normal cholesterol levels, anything up to 199mg/dL is considered normal for your total cholesterol. If it falls within the range of 180-220 it is ideal. For LDL, anything up to 129 mg/dL is normal, and under 100 is ideal. For HDL, above 35 mg/dL is normal, and over 50 is ideal.

Normal cholesterol levels are usually associated with a lower risk for cardiovascular disease, but not always. Normal cholesterol levels are also necessary in the formation of lipid rafts, such as caveolae and detergent-resistant membrane domains.
