What is osteoporosis
Osteoporosis, which means “porous bones,” is a disease that thins and weakens the bones to the point where they can easily fracture or break. Osteoporosis is common health concern for postmenopausal women.
About one out of two women and one out of eight men over the age of 50 years will have an osteoporotic related fracture of the vertebrae or hip.
Another significant portion of adult women have osteopenia (low bone mass), which puts them at increased risk for developing osteoporosis and/or fractures.
Symptoms of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is referred to as the silent thief because bone loss can occur slowly for many years without symptoms until a sudden strain, bump, or fall causes a bone fracture. It most commonly affects bones in the hip, spine, or wrist. Once the bones have become weakened, osteoporosis reveals follows symptoms: back pain, collapsed vertebrae, loss of height, and spinal deformities.
Osteoporosis medication
There are a variety of medications that doctors prescribe, such as hormones and bisphosphonates (such as etidronate).
Recommended supplement is Calcium. It is essential for bone health; since it may not be possible to get adequate amounts through diet, supplements may be necessary. For prevention osteoporosis also recommended Vitamin D as aids in the absorption of calcium.
