Soy benefits for menopause and bone loss

Some studies have shown potential benefits of soy as hormone replacement therapy during menopause.

They reported those Japanese women who regularly consume soy products report less frequent and fewer hot flushes and other menopausal symptoms than American and European women who do not eat soy products.

A 3-month clinical trial observed a beneficial effect of soy protein on the frequency of hot flushes in postmenopausal women.
Italian researchers found a significant decrease in the average number of hot flushes experienced by postmenopausal women taking 60 g of soy protein isolate daily for 12 weeks.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the women taking soy experienced a 45% reduction in their daily hot flushes, compared with a 30% reduction in women taking a placebo.

The soy isoflavones are believed to bind at the estrogen receptors and act as mild agonists for estrogen in postmenopausal women, thus alleviating some menopausal symptoms experienced in estrogen deficiency.

The isoflavones in soy appear to inhibit bone resorption and benefit bone health in postmenopausal women. Estrogen is known to downregulate the activity of osteoclasts, thereby limiting bone resorption. The isoflavones in soy protein, acting as phytoestrogens, can bind to the estrogen receptors in bone tissue.

Animal studies reveal benefits of soy isoflavones, positive effect on bone density and counteract the effects of estrogen deficiency on bone. Ovariectomized rats normally experience bone loss due to their estrogen deficiency. However, when given either estradiol- or soy protein-containing isoflavones, these rats do not experience a loss in bone density.

It is also known that ipriflavone, a synthetic isoflavone, is successfully used as an estrogen replacement in menopausal women, as it increases bone mass in women with low bone density.
Recently, postmenopausal women who were consuming isoflavone-rich soy protein for 6 months were found to be protected against spinal bone loss.

Osteoporosis treatment

What is osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, which means “porous bones,” is a disease that thins and weakens the bones to the point where they can easily fracture or break. Osteoporosis is common health concern for postmenopausal women.

About one out of two women and one out of eight men over the age of 50 years will have an osteoporotic related fracture of the vertebrae or hip.

Another significant portion of adult women have osteopenia (low bone mass), which puts them at increased risk for developing osteoporosis and/or fractures.

Symptoms of osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is referred to as the silent thief because bone loss can occur slowly for many years without symptoms until a sudden strain, bump, or fall causes a bone fracture. It most commonly affects bones in the hip, spine, or wrist. Once the bones have become weakened, osteoporosis reveals follows symptoms: back pain, collapsed vertebrae, loss of height, and spinal deformities.

Osteoporosis medication

There are a variety of medications that doctors prescribe, such as hormones and bisphosphonates (such as etidronate).
Recommended supplement is Calcium. It is essential for bone health; since it may not be possible to get adequate amounts through diet, supplements may be necessary. For prevention osteoporosis also recommended Vitamin D as aids in the absorption of calcium.

Vitamin D3 requirement

rickets1

Vitamin D3 is a hormone that has an important role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Vitamin D3 also known as cholecalciferol produced by the body when exposed to ultraviolet light or obtained from dietary sources.
Vitamin D3 plays a great role in the human body: helps the body absorb calcium, and this helps to maintain strong and healthy bones. Other function of Vitamin D3 is help bones mend and heal after injury. Vitamin D3 can help reduce inflammation in the body. Also there are evidence that vitamin D3 may also help prevent high blood pressure as well as some types of cancer.

The vitamin D3 requirement of healthy adults has never been precisely defined. Since vitamin D3 is produced in the skin on exposure to sunlight and can be retained in vertebrate tissues; humans may not have a requirement for vitamin D when sufficient sunlight is available.

However, vitamin D3 does become an important nutritional factor in the absence of sunlight.
In addition to geographical and seasonal factors, UV light from the sun may be blocked by factors such as air pollution, clothing, and sunscreens.

In fact, as air pollution became prevalent, the incidence of rickets became widespread in industrial cities.

In addition to these man-made barriers to adequate sunlight exposure, there is insufficient sunlight at northerly latitudes to maintain adequate levels of vitamin D3 in the skin. Under these conditions, vitamin D3 becomes a true vitamin in that it must be supplied in the diet on a regular basis.

The requirement for vitamin D3 is also dependent on the concentration of calcium and phosphorus in the diet, the physiological stage of development, age, sex, degree of exposure to the sun, and the amount of pigmentation in the skin.
